Sallie Tyszko - Textile Artist - Biographical

Sallie undertakes commissions for tapestry wallhangings of any size for public buildings and for private  customers from 18"x 20" to 20ft x 40ft and in price from £250 to £20,000.

Sallie worked from her small cottage and workshop in Oldshoremore,Sutherland for 21 years.
In 1999 she moved to the croft of Lochan a Mhoid, Ross-shire and opened her own workshop.   She moved in 2008 to a croft on the Isle of Great Bernera in the Outer Hebrides, opening own workshop in 2010. Weaving her wallhangings is Sallies' obsession, and raison d'être.

Using fishermen's net mending needles, cotton and transparent fishing line for warp, the weft is often as revolutionary; jute, lace and wools, chiffon, velvet, sequins, satin, plastic, silks, fleece, metal, mohair and cotton. Embroidery, crochet, plaiting and soumak are used. Wallhangings are mounted on driftwood, some incorporate objects trouvés, wire supports extending sections into the third dimension. Each one is totally unique.

The wools, materials and mohair are individually dyed for each tapestry wallhanging. The sheeps' wool and pure mohair from Ludi and Mo the Angora goats is clipped then handspun by Sallie and by expert handspinner Sheila Rodrick of Scalpay Linen. An 8-shaft James Lockie floor loom and upright tapestry loom are used for the weaving.Sallie studied weaving and design Art under Joanne Summerville in Cumbria, Noelle Boise in Argyll and Angie MacGregor in Wick
